What George Floyd Means to Me

George Floyd

When George Floyd’s daughter Gianna said, “Daddy changed the world, ”she was correct. Floyd’s death changed the world, me and you too. When I watched the video of his murder, it broke my heart. I was forced to realize that such a brazen killing could take place in broad daylight, in a pro-progressive city, with a knee of a smirking policeman as the weapon of choice.

My life felt devalued and cheapened. And I was concerned for my safety. I reasoned, “If they did that to him. What will they do to me?”

One year later America and I continue to wrestle with race, racism, and police brutality. Wrestling means doing something other than just talking. I am very proud that our church partnered with the Lake Highland Area Moms Against Racism. They have proven to be not only allies, but also accomplishes. Our church hosted their “Say Their Names” photo exhibit from Mother’s Day until this week. Church members and total strangers toured the exhibit and wept.

Together we produced a George Floyd vigil on May 25, 2021, the one year anniversary of his death. A beautiful array of races, classes and religions came together on our campus to pay our respects.

Let’s not grow weary of wrestling. Or as Galatians 6:9 says, “Do not grow weary in doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” NIV
